Zwischen den Jahren 1884 und 1886 hat Alexandre Guilmant «Livre de Noëls», Op. 60, eine Sammlung von 20 Stücken für Orgel oder Harmonium komponiert. Die Sammlung in vier Bänden wurde erstmals im Jahr 1886 veröffentlicht. Die «Variations On A Polish Noël» entstammen dem zweiten Band und sind übertitelt mit «Introduction et variations sur un ancien noël polonaise» (Accourez bergers fidèles, l’heure bénie a sonné). Die Variationen basieren auf das alte polnische Weihnachtslied «W Żłobie Leży», welches im angelsächsischen Raum als «Infant Holy, Infant lowly» bekannt ist.
